Global Women’s
Police Network Creates Links in Gulf States The International Association of Women Police (IAWP) has formally welcomed its newest affiliate member at a prestigious conference in Abu Dhabi. The IAWP Board of Directors, who are based across the world, have flown to the United Arab Emirates to attend the Emirates Women Police Association 1st Women in Policing Conference.
The conference is made possible with a directive from His Highness Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, who will be in attendance along with approximately 1000 policing representatives from across the Gulf States.
IAWP President Jane Townsley, a Chief Inspector with British Transport Police in London, said: “I applaud the aims of the Emirates Women Police Association to enhance the role of Emirati women and their contributions to police work.
“The objectives of this conference are to highlight the role women play in policing regionally and internationally, to recognise the latest international approaches of women in policing and to identify any challenges facing women in their policing career.
“These aims invoke all that the IAWP stands for – to enhance professional skills and knowledge, create opportunities for international networking and friendships and to share our common global experiences.
“Being a police officer is a unique and challenging role and though the countries in which we work may be very different, we have all lived and worked through experiences that have shaped us into the officers we are today. It is by sharing what we have learned throughout our professional lives that I believe we can help and enrich each other into becoming better police officers.
“I would like to express the sincere gratitude of the IAWP Board of Directors for being invited to attend the conference and to share in such an historic occasion.”
Amna M. Khamis Al Belooshi , of the Emirates Women Police Association, said: “We are honoured to welcome everyone to the forum in the UAE. The first women in police conference 2012 in Abu Dhabi with the topic “Women Policing….New Horizons for the Future”. We express our appreciation and pride for the proclamation of the Emirati Women Police Association, to be accredited as an affiliate member with the International Association of Women Police. The Proclamation of the Emirati Women Police Association (EWPA) became the umbrella of female police recruits to care for them during their pursuit within the police organisation. This will empower the EWPA to participate in international events and activities around the world with a voice for safety and security."
The IAWP has members in 60 countries throughout the world and its aim is to strengthen, unite and raise the profile of women working in the criminal justice system. The organisation is committed to further enhancing its members’ skills through professional development, training, recognition, mentoring, networking and peer support.

December 2011
Dear members,
At this time of year many of you will be celebrating Christmas with family and friends, I wish you all peace and happiness whether you are celebrating Christmas or another cultural or religious festival in December or January.
This is the time when we reach out to those in need, whether in our neighbourhood, community or across the globe. I would urge you to think of all the victims following the natural disaster in the Philippines, we already know that some IAWP members have been affected, other members are working hard to help their communities in the country.
2012 will bring new challenges as well as opportunities for IAWP and I am proud to be able to lead this great organisation into another year.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year.
Jane Townsley
President
International Association of Women Police
