PROGRAM PURPOSE:

An IAWP program whereby individual members and/or affiliates "adopt" a law enforcement officer from a developing country for membership in IAWP and provide continued membership support and friendship to this law enforcement officer.

Throughout this policy the individual/affiliate who is sponsoring a developing country officer will be referred to as the "sponsor" and the law enforcement officer being adopted will be referred to as the "adoptee". PURPOSE OF THE POLICY:
To establish guidelines for the management and operation of the "Adopt an Officer" Program.

To establish guidelines for the application and approval process for "Adopted Members"

To establish guidelines for the "sponsoring individual/affiliate"

To establish guidelines for the collection and distribution of funds donated for the support of the "Adopt an Officer" Program

Any person who would like to become a members of IAWP and would like to be sponsored for membership under the "Adopt and Officer" Program shall:
  1. Be a full time, active law enforcement officer, paid by public or government funds. (Reserve and retired officers may not participate in this program)
  2. Submit a letter to the appropriate Regional Co-coordinator or the Membership Chairperson, requesting membership in the IAWP and stating their reasons for wanting to be sponsored under the program. The letter must be legible and contain ALL of the following information:
      NAME
      RANK or POSITION
      COMPLETE AGENCY ADDRESS AND PHONE
      COMPLETE HOME ADDRESS AND PHONE
INDICATE WHICH ADDRESS IS TO BE USED FOR CORRESPONDENCE.

The Business Manager and/or Membership Chairperson will confirm the information in the letter. If necessary, contact may be initiated with the potential adoptee to obtain all of the required information. The letter will then be forwarded to the IAWP Treasurer, along with the attached form.

If possible, the Business Manager and/or Membership Chairperson will supply the name of the sponsor and submit the sponsor’s information, with the appropriate US funds for membership, along with the letter and the form. If no specific sponsor is submitted with the letter and form, the Treasurer may draw from the funds and names or potential sponsors already set aside for that purpose. The IAWP Treasurer will process the letter as an application and then return it to the Membership Chairperson for recording. In the absence of a name submitted as a sponsor, the Treasurer will draw from the list of potential sponsors and supply the Membership Chairperson with the selection. Upon receipt of the letter and form from the Treasurer, the Membership Chair shall:
  1. Write a letter to the sponsor. The letter will contain the name and address of the adoptee. The sponsor will be encouraged to initiate correspondence with the adoptee and maintain communication throughout the life of the membership.

  2. Write a letter to the adoptee. The letter will contain the name and address of the sponsor. The adoptee will be encouraged to initiate correspondence with the sponsor and maintain communication through out the life of the membership.

Sponsors will be encouraged to make a commitment to continue support and sponsorship of the adoptee for a minimum of three (3) years. Membership Renewal forms will be sent to the sponsor each year. If at the time of renewal, the sponsor opts to no longer continue sponsorship of the adoptee, the sponsor must state so, in writing, to the Membership Chairperson. Dependent upon funds available, a new sponsor may be assigned from the list of potential sponsors maintained by the Treasurer. If a sponsor cannot be found, the adoptee will be notified in writing that sponsorship is discontinued and be invited to continue membership on their own. If at any time an adoptee opts not to continue membership, he/she must notify the Business Manager and/or Membership Chairperson in writing. The "Adopt an Officer" Program will be advertised in WOMEN POLICE four times per year and should solicit both potential sponsors and adoptee.
